We were very anxious and ready for this appointment because Annelisa seems to have an allergy to egg! Over the last several weeks, I have been introducing her to the foods that we are eating at most meals and slowly moving away from purees. She has been eager to eat what we are eating, so about two weeks ago I gave her scrambled eggs with some taco meat from my taco at breakfast. Little did I know, she would love it, but then promptly begin to turn red, have her lips swell, and start coughing! A full allergic reaction was happening before my eyes! I knew that it was the eggs as that was the only new food for her. Thankfully after vomiting up the eggs and taking some Benadryl she was good as new! Fast forward to her birthday celebration, time for her smash cake, I didn't even think about the eggs being a problem in the cake or that the icing would have meringue powder (an egg product) in it. Well, our little lady dove into the sweet cake and icing and then she started to turn red, her lips started to swell...again she is having an allergic reaction! Promptly took her to the tub began bathing her to clean her up, at this point she is starting to develop hives everywhere the frosting touched. We gave her Benadryl and then my hubby started to rock her. Well, a few minutes later she vomits up all she had eaten of the cake and icing. We knew at this point that a food allergy was here and it is time to discuss it with her P.A. Annelisa's pediatrician has been out on bed rest and maternity leave since Christmas, so I've seen the P.A. for all of her appointments since then. I have developed a great relationship with her, as we've seen her several times due to Annelisa's ear infection that required two rounds of antibiotics to clear up.
At her appointment, we discussed all the positives of Annelisa's development: crawling, pulling up, her first words, and we discussed our great concerns over the egg allergy! The positives from the appointment are that most kids out grow an egg allergy by five years old! Annelisa could be extra sensitive to concentrated egg (scrambled, merigue powder, and the like) and baked goods with a less concentrated egg content, pasta, etc, may not pose a problem for her. We have to wait and see and this Mama is not interested in causing more hives and reactions! So we are waiting on re-introducing concentrated egg product until at least 15 months old...probably longer. I will give her some baked goods, but very hesitantly! I won't be going out of my way to expose her!
At this appointment, most kids get four vaccines, two of them are live, and egg based! I was especially worried about her potential to react since egg has caused so much concern for us. We discussed the various vaccine schedules for Annelisa. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to
not vaccinate my daughter...I just want to do what is best for her in keeping her well in ALL areas! So with the P.A.'s advice we decided to only do three vaccines at this appointment, the Hib, PCV, and Varicella (Chicken Pox--live vaccine). That way if she reacted we would now that the Varicella caused it as it was the only new vaccine for her. In mid-May, I'll take her in to receive MMR (live vaccine), all by itself, to be able to watch for any reaction, then at 15 months (June) we will proceed with the normal schedule. I felt really comfortable with this approach and cared for with individual attention! It was not a one size fits all approach! Thankfully, Annelisa hasn't reacted to any of her vaccines so far! Praise God!
