18 Month Well Baby Exam

This is the simplest, easiest, most joy filled well baby exam Annelisa has had since she was born. I had NO concerns, Dr. Linh Ho had NO concerns, it was simply glorious! All Praise Be to God! I am so thankful that there's not more to write about this exam! Annelisa is growing in every way! So so so thankful!

The two big headlines from the appointment:

  1. Annelisa has been growing like crazy! (see below!)
  2. Annelisa can stop taking Zantac for reflux! (Update: as of late October...she's off of Zantac completely!)

15 Month Well Baby Exam

It's been a few weeks since this appointment and this was by far the hardest well-baby exam for Annelisa and me. It was hard for several reasons. First, our pediatrician, Dr. Starnes, will be leaving the practice at the end of August to stay home with her children. I totally understand as a fellow stay-at-home mom, but we will miss her! Secondly, we have dealt with a lot of health issues with Annelisa over the last six months and Dr. Starnes was out on maternity leave. Again, not her fault, but it made "catching up" all the harder in light of her leaving. Thirdly, Annelisa cried (really screamed!) from the moment they called us back to the exam room. Let me tell you, it's hard to have a conversation with the Medical Assistant, RN, or doctor while your daughter is almost inconsolable! Thankfully this shows separation anxiety is in FULL FORCE!! Yay for a milestone! Fourth, I hate the conversation about milestones...Annelisa is on the "later" side of the ranges especially in gross motor skills (walking) and it's really frustrating for me to observe (or perceive) what others perceptions are of her. Lastly, it was hard because of the blood draw at the end of the appointment. I had to literally pin Annelisa down by laying on her chest and legs, holding her arms and turning her face. It's so hard to watch and feel your child sob and know that this is really for her good, brought this mama to tears!

The blood draw was for a blood allergy panel. We've been battling eczema since last summer and GERD (reflux) diagnosed in April of this year. Based on Annelisa's response to egg at her birthday (more on that here and here) we wanted to proceed with this allergy testing. Man! Am I glad we went through this! We have since seen a wonderful allergist, Dr. Joann Lin, in McKinney about the results of the panel. Annelisa came back with six allergens, four of them are considered somewhat serious. The scores of the panel range from 0 = no allergy to 6 = very serious allergy. Thankfully, we had no 6's!

Egg white = 4
Dog = 4
Wheat = 3
Peanut = 2
Milk = 1
Soy = 1

Dr. Lin has advised that for the next one to two years (or until we allergy test again) we AVOID all egg, peanuts, and tree nuts with Annelisa. We are currently feeding her a wheat free diet to see how she does when we reintroduce it, as it could be a false positive from exposure to wheat product...which is in TONS of foods! If you really start reading ingredient labels it's mind blowing how many things have wheat! A wheat allergy is NOT a gluten allergy...they are two totally different things! The dog allergy made me heart sick! We have our Westie, Farley, I feared that he would have to leave us to live in Houston with my parents. Thankfully, Dr. Lin suggested that instead we make Annelisa's room a Farley free zone and use a quality air purifier in there. Both very doable to keep our pup! The milk and soy are negligible, most people would register with a low 1 on this type of test for those products so we can continue to feed Annelisa her loved dairy products.  We will continue to carry Annelisa's EpiPen and Benadryl with us at all times in case of an allergic reaction. We also have an eczema treatment plan with Green, Yellow, and Red zones! This appointment was a bright spot following the well baby on June 27th. We have a plan and a great doctor to walk with down the food allergy road! I thought that I was compassionate to parents of littles with food allergies...I've realized that no I really wasn't! I have a new and improved perspective on the topic and the seriousness of it. I will never take a food allergy for granted again!

Annelisa also received one vaccine at her 15 month visit, the DTap. That was nothing after the blood draw!

We would love to have you praying with us for Annelisa! Please pray that Annelisa will continue to develop into the woman God has designed her to be in every way (physically, mentally, emotionally). Pray that we will parent Annelisa' heart and not just her behavior. Pray that God will continue to grant us wisdom with how we feed her and manage her allergies and reflux. We are so thankful for the work that God has and is doing in her little life. We are so thankful to see all the growth and development she has done, in spite of the challenges she has faced over the last almost 16 months. Glory be to God!

12 Month Well Baby Exam

We were very anxious and ready for this appointment because Annelisa seems to have an allergy to egg! Over the last several weeks, I have been introducing her to the foods that we are eating at most meals and slowly moving away from purees. She has been eager to eat what we are eating, so about two weeks ago I gave her scrambled eggs with some taco meat  from my taco at breakfast. Little did I know, she would love it, but then promptly begin to turn red, have her lips swell, and start coughing! A full allergic reaction was happening before my eyes! I knew that it was the eggs as that was the only new food for her. Thankfully after vomiting up the eggs and taking some Benadryl she was good as new! Fast forward to her birthday celebration, time for her smash cake, I didn't even think about the eggs being a problem in the cake or that the icing would have meringue powder (an egg product) in it. Well, our little lady dove into the sweet cake and icing and then she started to turn red, her lips started to swell...again she is having an allergic reaction! Promptly took her to the tub began bathing her to clean her up, at this point she is starting to develop hives everywhere the frosting touched. We gave her Benadryl and then my hubby started to rock her. Well, a few minutes later she vomits up all she had eaten of the cake and icing. We knew at this point that a food allergy was here and it is time to discuss it with her P.A. Annelisa's pediatrician has been out on bed rest and maternity leave since Christmas, so I've seen the P.A. for all of her appointments since then. I have developed a great relationship with her, as we've seen her several times due to Annelisa's ear infection that required two rounds of antibiotics to clear up.

At her appointment, we discussed all the positives of Annelisa's development: crawling, pulling up, her first words, and we discussed our great concerns over the egg allergy! The positives from the appointment are that most kids out grow an egg allergy by five years old! Annelisa could be extra sensitive to concentrated egg (scrambled, merigue powder, and the like) and baked goods with a less concentrated egg content, pasta, etc, may not pose a problem for her. We have to wait and see and this Mama is not interested in causing more hives and reactions! So we are waiting on re-introducing concentrated egg product until at least 15 months old...probably longer. I will give her some baked goods, but very hesitantly! I won't be going out of my way to expose her!

At this appointment, most kids get four vaccines, two of them are live, and egg based! I was especially worried about her potential to react since egg has caused so much concern for us. We discussed the various vaccine schedules for Annelisa. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to not vaccinate my daughter...I just want to do what is best for her in keeping her well in ALL areas! So with the P.A.'s advice we decided to only do three vaccines at this appointment, the Hib, PCV, and Varicella (Chicken Pox--live vaccine). That way if she reacted we would now that the Varicella caused it as it was the only new vaccine for her. In mid-May, I'll take her in to receive MMR (live vaccine), all by itself, to be able to watch for any reaction, then at 15 months (June) we will proceed with the normal schedule. I felt really comfortable with this approach and cared for with individual attention! It was not a one size fits all approach! Thankfully, Annelisa hasn't reacted to any of her vaccines so far! Praise God!

9 Month Well Baby Exam

Getting this appointment proved far more difficult than expected. It was moved two different times! The first time because it was scheduled two days after Christmas and Annelisa's pediatrician would be out of the office; the second time due to her pediatrician being placed on bed rest. This appointment was with one of the P.A.'s in the office and will be with her again for her 12 month exam.

Overall, the appointment was uneventful as it is the only well baby exam during the first year without any immunizations. YEA!! No shots! :) However, Annelisa was very resentful of the P.A. completing her exam! She cried through the whole thing! I have known that separation anxiety was beginning to happen. Particularly in new situations with brand new people, which is a developmental milestone. Yet, her desire and need to be held combined with my attempting to complete the 9 month milestones questionnaire, made for an entertaining appointment.

Annelisa is developing perfectly for her! She hasn't achieved every item on the questionnaire, but that is normal. She will grow at her rate in every way...which is something God is working hard on me to understand and accept! I am struggling with her rate of growth not being "on par" with others' babies. I have begun to dread her well baby check-ups. I hate that I don't look forward to learning how much she's grown. At my core, I am fearful of being found at fault in caring for her, or not having done something I should that I didn't know I should do. My dear husband has to talk me off this cliff before each visit now. And I hate that! I also hate that I feel judged by those whose babies have completed milestones that Annelisa hasn't yet and doesn't seem interested in. This is my battle in the "mommy war." I hate the unspoken competition that I feel with others in this nursery stage of life that are friends or acquaintances.

I am truly thankful that Annelisa continues to grow well and stays between the 50th and 75th percentile in every area! And no matter what, I love her more than I ever could have imagined, feel so blessed to have her in my life, and look forward to watching her achieve each milestone. Just as God loves me and looks forward to me achieving each new milestone, too! I am so thankful that God is not comparing me to others my age, or stage, and that He loves me and see me as He sees His son, Jesus Christ. I am continually praying for the ability to see Annelisa for Annelisa as Christ sees her and NOT through the lense of comparison with others!

6 Month Well Baby Exam

Today, we saw Dr. Starnes for Annelisa's six month well baby exam! Our little lady seems to be developing into quite the observer (like me) and thinker (like her daddy). Her little personality also has a streak of stubbornness mixed with plenty of easy going, cuteness!  I will admit to being more nervous this time, than for the last couple of well baby exams. Why was I nervous, you might ask! She hasn't reached all of the developmental milestones...which are really averages, on time. For example, the child will not initiate rolling over! She has rolled twice on her own to date! I was worried that this milestone not being reached yet would be a signal to worrisome things...yet, God is so good to continue to grow little Annelisa in His timing and Dr. Starnes found her to be perfect in every way! We all agree that Annelisa will roll, it's just a matter of time... especially since she's starting tripod!

Her personality has charmed us, her smile melts us, and her giggle is music to our ears! I look forward to watching her grow while entrusting her to God daily! By His grace, I am the mother to this darling little girl!

Annelisa is 4 Months!

Annelisa is FOUR months old!

Annelisa and I saw Dr. Starnes for her four month well baby exam on Thursday, July 26, 2012, making her exactly 18 weeks old!

At her 4 month well baby exam she:
  • weighed 14 pounds 7 ounces, placing her near the 75th percentile.
  • measured 25 inches long, placing her near the 75th percentile.
  • measured  15.75 inches for her head circumference, placing her near the 25th percentile.
I discussed with Dr. Starnes some of my observations of Annelisa's eyes. Since her two month well baby exam, I've noticed off and on, and almost daily the last month, that Annelisa's eyes do not focus together. Both eyes focus just not in the same way. It has seemed that her right eye was turning in to focus on things the left eye was focused straight on. Dr. Starnes was able to see both eyes turning in at different points in the appointment today. So what do we do with this...we watch and observe her for now. I'm not too worried because Annelisa's daddy had Strabismus as a child and an operation at 2 years old to correct it. I found this website that details it here. He also wears prisms in his glasses that help correct it today. We know that if Annelisa does have this it is very treatable and doesn't affect her well being long term. At her six month well baby exam, we will revisit this with Dr. Starnes and possibly be referred to an ophthalmologist for the beginning of diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Starnes gave us the go ahead to begin rice cereal! So next time I grocery shop, I'll pick some up with some baby utensils and bowls and we'll try it out. Her instructions to me were simple, one tablespoon of cereal mixed with breast milk making it very runny then over time gradually increasing the consistency to the equivalent of stage 1 baby food. If she likes it we can then try other grains like oatmeal. At her six month well baby exam, we will discuss fruits and veggies!

Annelisa received her next round of vaccines, neither of us enjoyed them! She and I both cried today! :( Infant Tylenol works wonders and so far she isn't that uncomfortable. I hated having to help hold her arms down, but at the same time I wouldn't want anyone else to do it!

Her milestones this month include:
  • figured out how to start sucking thumb
  • likes to suck her thumb to go to sleep
  • championed self soothing for bed time and nap time
  • grabbing toys, like her rattle and the dangling toys on her play mat
  • grabbing and holding on to mom or dad when carried and held
  • grabbing and pulling her clothes while playing
  • started playing in her exersaucer...it's a little overwhelming still, but she's warming up to all the toys and pushing with her legs!
  • manipulating fingers by pushing them together
  • holding her hands
  • starting to teeth...likes Sophie the Giraffe and frozen teether toys
  • finds the direction of voices and music by turning her head to look and listen
  • seeing people across a room
  • knows mom and dad by voice and sight
  • moved her car seat harness up one notch
  • super manning in tummy time
  • can complete 15 minutes of tummy time without a problem
  • can push herself up on her forearms
  • can lift her head up and look around during tummy time
  • can roll onto her side from her back
  • can wiggle and scoot herself off of her play mat or quilt onto the carpet (there have been some near head bumps)
  • doesn't really like to be in her bouncy seat or swing anymore, she'd rather be on the floor playing with toys and wiggling around
  • started to giggle (The first time with Aunt Lauren in the car after church on 7/8/12.)
  • stayed in the nursery at church for the first time on 7/8/12. Annelisa slept in the swing!
  • went swimming for the first time
  • celebrated her first Fourth of July
  • still wearing size 2 diapers
  • still wearing 6 month outfits, onesies, and dresses
  • sleeps for 11 to 12 hours every night without interruption
  • taking two to three naps a day (one of these is usually three hours) in her crib
  • nursing five to six times a day

Annelisa is 2 Months!

Annelisa is 2 months old! The time has flown by at times and crept at others. These first two months have been filled with tons of learning and growing for our little lady.

At her two month well baby exam Annelisa weighed 11 pounds, 10 ounces placing her in the 75th percentile. She measured 23.75 inches long placing her in the 90th percentile. Her head measured 15.25 inches in circumference placing her the 50th percentile. Plus she received her first round of vaccines! She was quite uncomfortable that afternoon, but Infant Tylenol works miracles!

I was so excited to find out her weight! I had attempted to estimate her weight based on our bathroom scale with me holding her, but finding out the exact number (as of Friday, May 25) was thrilling. After her weight gain issues at birth and hospitalization at Children's (see that post here), I was ecstatic with her weight as was Dr. Starnes, her pediatrician. She moved from the 25th percentile (for weight) at her 2 week appointment to the 75th at two months! She and I have worked very hard at feeding and it shows! God has done such an amazing thing to have a mother nurse her child and have her body take care of baby's without the mother thinking about it.

Some of the other milestones this month include:

  • Sleeping in her crib full time
  • Sleeping 6 to 7 hours straight most nights
  • Taking naps mostly in her swing, bouncy seat, and car seat
  • Wearing all 3 month outfits and onesies
  • Wearing size 1 diapers...but not for much longer!
  • Discovering lights and faces
  • Able to hold her head up for a few seconds by herself
  • Getting stronger at tummy time, she lasts from 10 to 15 minutes before she starts to protest
  • Starting to really smile (Especially at me! :))
  • Starting to coo and make other happy noises
  • Enjoying bath time a lot!
  • Going to Grammy and GP's (my parents in Houston) for her first overnight trip
  • Going to Mimi and Pops' (my in-laws in Plano)
  • Going to Northwood Hills to meet my students, my fellow teachers, and staff
  • Going to church for the first time
  • Going to a sit down, get waited on restaurant for the first time
A note on her outfit for 2 months...this was also her going home from the hospital outfit at birth....it didn't fit her very well back in March. I had picked it out with the anticipation of having a 10 pound baby which we would have had had she not been nearly three weeks early. So for comparison of how much she's grown here is one of the pictures from March 25 when we came home for the first time.

Yes, it is the same top...hasn't she grown a lot! :)

During this month, we also celebrated my first Mother's Day! We were in Houston for Auntie Erin's graduation. Annelisa hit her next growth spurt, so she and I had a lot of bounding (aka feeding) time during the night and day.

Too say the least it was a busy month!

Outtakes from her 2 month photo shoot
"Why mom? I don't want to take pictures!"

"Fine if you're going to take pictures then I'm eating the teddy bear!"

"Why??? I just want to be held!"

"Okay, I'll be my usual curious self!"

"And eat my teddy bear!!"

"I'm sitting aren't I?"

Isn't she a cutie! :)
